Not
once but
twice I have done some sort of meme outlining which of the fifty states I have visited. In 2010, I knocked off another state plus a territory and possibly a province; records are hazy and conflicting on the latter point as is often the case with history. In light of the additional states I've visited since I did the map meme in 2007, it seems like it might be time to do another such meme, but that seemed boring. A colored in map is just a visual indicator, which isn't as interesting as what was actually done in the state. Where did I go? Does it really count if I don't remember? Can I remember?
I decided to find out. If all goes according to plan, every Sunday in 2011 I will post a story about my time (or lack thereof) in a state. We'll move through them in the order that they joined the union, which of course means that we'll start with the great state of Delaware. We'll end with the District of Columbia, which doesn't conveniently fit on the list otherwise. Perhaps after that we'll do the same for Canadian Provinces, but one thing at a time, eh?
I found that there were errors when I did the previous memes, so I've consulted with the only person who knows my travel history prior to the age of five better than I, namely my mother. The entries that follow over the next year will therefore be as authoritative as I can make them.
While we wait for the first week, I'll warm up the scoreboard. How high will it go? I'll give full credit if I either remember eating a meal or staying overnight in the state, which seems to be the traditional measure amongst my friends. Partial credit will be awarded for states that I am too young to remember visiting. I was also going to award partial credit for any states where I failed to eat or sleep, or where I never left the airport, but as far as I can tell no states are actually covered by those descriptions.

Due to long standing geek union rules, no list of the 50 states is complete without referencing
