Run Update [and minor Bike Update]

Ok, so I ran a 5K. What's happened since?

Well, I was tentatively going to run another 5K on June 10, but I had just returned from a vacation where I had no real opportunity to run and I worked the cheese stand the day before so I passed on that. That leaves me with three races to reach the jacket that sort of justifies this whole thing ( Read more... )

It'd be a lot more walk than run, that's for sure.

What do the t-shirts look like? :-)

Good to hear a bit more about what's going on locally - most of my running friends are West Coast-ish. I've only been running for the last couple of years, and not that seriously, but I'll probably race with that crowd one of these days. (Of course, I still haven't been cleared to start running again after a few foot-related injuries.)

Unlike my crazy sister up there, I barely qualify as a runner. This is the first time in a decade I've really done it; most of my exercise in the intervening years was throwing around large pieces of metal.

What kind of throwing around large pieces of metal?

I spent most of my life as really definitely not a runner. Mostly due to some weirdness with the mechanics of my legs, and asthma. But for the last fifteen years I've been a fairly serious martial artist, and got better control over the allergies and asthma, and then eventually discovered forefoot running, and suddenly running wasn't horrible anymore. So now when I do run, I mostly run because I can. I still haven't gotten over that ;-)

I want to get back to running partly just because, and partly because I only have so much time to train, and a lot of the martial arts stuff I need to be doing right now does not give me as much cardio as I'd like. Running serves up a whole lot of cardio in a relatively small package, timewise.

I was a very serious weight lifter from about 1991 to 2002, first for football and then for boot camp prep. At my football peak I could squat press 500+ pounds ten times. One serious MCL injury later [see also boot camp] I became much more sporadic about working out in general - I've lifted weights for roughly 5 of the subsequent 10 years, although never with the same dedication or due to the knee with the same weight. It's been a more casual "I enjoy this form of working out" rather than "I MUST work out ( ... )

Nope, I'm not the right kind of crazy for that.

I did my bike commute all of last winter - which was, admittedly, mild. Carbide studded bike tires are amazing. It was fine.
