Another First KissThey Might Be Giants Our wedding reception did not have dancing or a DJ. Instead, we hooked an iPod up to the reception hall's sound system and played back a randomized playlist of some of our favorite tracks. The only song that we specifically pulled out for special attention was a little appreciated They Might Be Giants song "Another First Kiss", which we pulled out for a quick last dance before we returned to the hotel.
I find TMBG to be somewhat frustrating. The first time I saw them in concert was Halloween night, half the crowd was in costume and the Odeon was completely sold out, and it was absolutely terrible. Like "worst shows of all time" terrible. It was so bad that I didn't go to see them again for many years. When I finally did go again, it was fantastic. Since then I've seen them several more times, and while it has never reached the depths of that first show, there have definitely been some down shows. Given that TMBG has a remarkable deep catalog, rabid fans (every time I've seen them it has been a sell out) and is mostly happy uptempo pop, I find this inconsistency to be baffling.
The albums are more consistent (I own most of the studio ones) and they have a few all time great songs, but "Another First Kiss" is not one of them in the estimation of most people. It is currently only ranked
495th in TMBG's catalog by their fans. For whatever reason, it has always stuck in my head as a nice romantic song that encapsulates the sweetness of a first kiss. I'm pretty sure I stuck it on the wedding playlist, and I know I'm the one who picked it to play at the end.
As you know, the marriage went down hill from there, but the wedding and following party were awesome. I wish it had been the other way around.
PS - It's currently on a (hopefully brief) hiatus, but you can read and possibly should read the breakdown of
every TMBG song ever by my friends The Spektrum and Lazy Bones.
