1. Friday after work I headed down to the Cleveland Print Room for the opening reception of their new show
Spitball. The show collected the works of a number of photographers under the age of 30. I enjoyed a higher than usual percentage of the art, said hi to Shari and Jeff, and headed back to my house. M and I got dinner at
Deagan's (I had the pierogis with short ribs, which were excellent) and called it a night.
2. On Saturday after all my errands and CrossFit I took my aunt (technically, the widow of my grandfather's first cousin) out to lunch at
Tres Potrillos. The must have had somebody call off as the staff was clearly in panic mode, but we weren't in a hurry and had a leisurely lunch with plenty of chips. I had a pulled pork with salsa verde, which was unlike anything I'd previously had at a Mexican restaurant. I quite enjoyed it.
That night M and I went to the Orchestra. The
advertised highlight was pianist
Yefim Bronfman soloing on Beethoven's
"Emperor" Piano Concerto No. 5, and while I certainly enjoyed that, I much preferred
Elgar's Symphony No. 2, which I found to pleasantly interesting, due to my unfamiliarity, if nothing else. Going forward, I may make my orchestra strategy "buy tickets for world premieres and pieces that haven't been played by the orchestra in 20 years" (26 for Elgar in this case). Regrettably, the latter info is not available on the website.
After the show, we considered going out for a drink since we were moderately dressed up anyway, but after a few misfires and crowded bars we went back to M's instead. I fell asleep quite early in SNL.
3. Sunday morning we rose early and headed to
Burton, Ohio for the annual fire hall pancake breakfast. We met
gieves,
darlox,
sparklie_lady and Don,
ayb2 and Brent, Cynthia, John & Carol,
jumpinfool, Mikey & Maria, and five assorted kids. I myself had ten pancakes, M's sausage in addition to my own, two containers of milk and an awful lot of maple syrup. A good time was had by all!
Afterwards, M and I went for a brief visit to Rafa, the widower of one of her old professors. Rafa lives close to Burton and has a bakery and a small scale sheep farm. We fed day old bread to the sheep and their guardian goat while admiring newly born lambs. We also petted Rafa's enormous dog Angel, who is really adorable.
After radio, I headed over to
zoethe's and
theferrett's for an
Oscar watching party.
gieves,
butterandjelly and
jumpinfool were also present.
theferrett had recently purged his books, and I had the opportunity to go through the discards and snag anything I might like. I managed to keep it to a modest ten books, and some of those are intended as gifts for other people. I watched a few hours of telecast then headed home to prefer for my baseball season ticket draft.
The whole weekend was much improved by some bright sunlit days. As M said, we did the weekend right.
Media Consumption: Nothing completed beyond what is outlined above, but I finished all but three stories in the Stephen King collection
The Bazaar of Bad Dreams.
