I went to CrossFit 92 times in 2018, which sounds good until you realize that at my membership level the maximum I could do would be times a week, or 156 times per year. Sure, I always lose some to vacations and holidays, but even if you assume 25 would be missed for that, that still leaves nearly 40 sessions that were missed due to conflict, illness or what have you.
In addition, early in 2018 the 7:30pm MW intro class I had been attending since I started going in
late 2014 was cancelled due to a lack of attendance. I then started going to the 6:30pm TR lite class, while continuing at the Saturday 11am intro class. This had a number of impacts:
- The class got harder, as it started involving dumbbells and other weights. This is a good thing, since I had likely plateaued to a certain extent.
- The free yoga class at work was also TR 6:30pm, so I didn't do yoga once in 2018 after doing it several
dozen times in 2017. This is not ideal.
- With a 7:30pm class, I was able to bike to work, bike home, walk Tulip and make it to CrossFit. With a 6:30pm class, I was not able to bike on CrossFit days unless I really got moving early in the day. This happened all of once in 2018, instead of the dozens and dozens of times in 2017.
In light of all this, last Saturday I signed up for the member level workouts. This involves barbells and greater weight, but more importantly it opens the range of available classes dramatically. Even if I just go after work it opens up four days instead of two. In addition to letting my raise that CrossFit total higher, hopefully this will open up more biking opportunities by letting me swap CrossFit and bike days due to weather considerations.
As far as biking goes, in large part due to this CrossFit/bike conflict I had a relatively low yearly total, with 859.4 miles on 48 commutes. Aside from June, when I
tied my single-month record while winning Bike to Work month, I didn't ride more than seven times in any month. And let's be honest, June only happened when I consciously chose to skip CrossFit to win Bike to Work month. Just as concerning, I didn't ride my bike even once outside of commuting.
I also managed to break another set of pedals, which led me to move up a level in price and hopefully durability. For extra fun, in my sole December ride, I discovered that my headlight was not firmly attached to the mounting bracket by watching it fall off the bike to shatter on the street. Whee...
For the Middle Earth inclined, my commute total since 2015 of 4622.1 miles has me a mere 14.9 miles (one lousy commute) short of finishing the tenth leg to
The Black Gate and the Day of Doom. That puts me about three years from finishing at the current 1,011 miles per year for the last seven years.
