Sick as a Bird 2

For the second time, the combination of Birdie not feeling well and M being up all night with her led me to take a day off work, which pushes me to 9.5 sick days over 19.5 years, 2 of which were for Birdie.

Given that we're still locked down pretty tighter here due to the ranging Omicron surge and there still not being an approved vaccine for the under 5 set, you might wonder how Birdie got sick. As I've mentioned previously, Birdie's angriest moment of the day is often when she is pooping! You can therefore imagine how unhappy she is when she is unable to poop for multiple days in a row. Think "so unhappy that she didn't sleep more than an hour straight from Tuesday night to Thursday morning, despite actually pooping on Wednesday morning." Constipation in babies is no joke.

I rearranged my schedule Wednesday morning so that M could get some sleep after the rough Tuesday night. Birdie pooped Wednesday morning so we thought things would get better, but after a similarly rough Wednesday night where I got up much earlier than usual to spell M, I took off Thursday. Of course, by the time we went to the pediatrician on Thursday morning Birdie was once again completely fine, but there was so much sleep deprivation going on that we needed the day off.

As to what caused it, who knows? We've been mixing whole milk in with her formula as we start to transition off, so that could have been it. There was a little soy in some of the black bean burgers that M had fed to her, so maybe that it. Or maybe it was some other damn thing. Babies are delicate systems and there's not a lot of diagnostics information available.

Anyway, we had been doubling up on the prunes and prune juice since Wednesday morning, and it finally came through for her (so to speak) on Thursday. She also got prescribed a medication to soften her poop. Thankfully, it hasn't swung the other way to diarrhea.

I have to admit that I assumed if I had to take time off from work to take care of a sick Birdie it would be because M was herself too sick to function, but if Birdie keeps M up all night, my work is flexible enough to make it work.
