Very quick, because I'm about to go to bed - lovely work! Remind me to give you a proper comment later, when I'm less tired.
Okay, editing for non-exhaustion...
I really love the way you've expanded on the characterization in canon, on the issues that lurk beneath the surface in the relationship of these two guys. The dialogue is spot-on, as are their ways of handling, or attempting not to handle, what's most difficult for them emotionally. And I love, love, love the conversational segue from working things out to looking into the possibilities of something more. Leaving this at the stage of the potential/anticipated, rather than delivering the full payoff, was a really smart choice as well - sweet and sexy, and, of course, leaving the possibilities open
( ... )
That was just a throwaway line, at least in that it wasn't meant to be so specific. It was just me assuming that, as a soldier working in dangerous areas, he'd've seen a lot more death among his military colleagues than Danny would've have among the police. But you're right: it's doubtful Steve lost many of his fellow SEALs. Sorry if it was an ill-considered, falsely leading statement.
Thanks for your comments here about characterization. It's the draw of writing this fandom for me, the way the show can only scrape the surface, so we're left to dig a little deeper. It's good to hear this seemed plausible, especially as they are such guys. That's a fine line to walk, emotionally.
sorry to crowd in on the thread, but many, many SEALs have died in Iraq and in Afghanistan. And we've been at war in both countries long w/in Steve's career timeline, although of course we don't know much at all about his deployment. I kind of like that there's room to assume all sorts of things, either way.
Back to story comments, omfg, cynthia_arrow your characterizations! Danny's pain about Meka, so tightly contained like he's bottlenecked and can't get it out. I so felt his resentment at the memorial with all those people (including the IA guy) being two-faced with their mournful looks.
And the hug! The hug was utterly fantastic, and both their reactions afterward had so much emotional integrity, I had total shivers.
I loved Danny's realization it had finally stopped bothering him he'd been taken away from the HPD...and how that hurt, too. It's strange but true, how that would add to his grief.
Just a lovely, lovely story. I especially enjoyed how you left it open-ended.
love love love love love. So good to read fic by you again, and what a treat that it's of the Steve/Danno variety. You captured Dan's voice perfectly and I love Steve and his half-sentences. :)
that's simply fantastic! wow, you have their voices so greatly, especially Danny. you really capture the undercurrent of anger and grief, how he's aggravated at people tip-toeing around him. and they sizzle together ♥
