When I first started getting into the ASOIAF fandom I assumed most people would like most of the POV characters, especially Catelyn. It took by surprise that she was apparently so widely disliked. Sure, she wasn't my absolute favorite, but I thought that her thoughts about war and love were so universe and frankly modern, that she'd be relate-able to most readers. Not so, apparently. Catelyn has some ugly moments, but to me, the entire point of ASOIAF is to see conflicts from all angles with no easy good guys or bad guys, just humans plodding along. But w/e. Some people apparently never got that memo. ;)
Anyway, what I like about Cat is her strength in the role of a noble woman, someone both powerless and powerful. I love her struggles with anger, longing and knowing when she has to keep her personal feeling in check versus when she can't. I personally find what happened to her to be one of the most tragic fates of the series because she really made all the best choices she could have considering her situation and background and was never in a position where her considerable bravery and intelligence was able to triumph.
