Working and CF

May 22, 2012 13:07

So, I have to go in for a tune up at the end of this week. That means, of course, that I won't be able to work for the next two weeks since I'll be holed up in the hospital...which really sucks because I just got promoted at work, and I don't want to lose that position.

How do you guys deal with balancing work and CF?

Yes, I often struggle with balancing work with CF. I just (reluctantly) accepting a full time job and am worried about how it will go. Between time off for doctors appointments and weeks off for tune-ups, it can be very hard. I'll admit that I haven't quite figured it out yet. My last boss was incredible and so understanding about all the time I needed off for medical appointments, etc, and was really supportive when I had to do a home IV for two weeks. I have yet to discover how my new boss will react...
I find it hard to have CF in the work place, and maybe especially because I work in healthcare (I am an occupational therapist). I always hate starting a new job and finding the right time and way to tell my coworkers about the CF. the coughing usually gives it away though...
Anyways, feel free to add me as a LJ friend! I hope your tune up goes ok. Xo

Generally, my boss is also really good about granting me time off for medical leave. This is the first time that I've really felt it might be a problem. But, my job is a student job, so I am kind of terrified about what's going to happen when I have to find another job after graduating. Ugh, such is life I guess...

And, I just added you as an LJ friend! ^_^

I work part time which gives me enough free time to cope with problems should they arise. Or be lazy. When I first started (over 10 years ago!) I was active most of my time off and only had spells where I used that cushion. Now I have spells when I don't need it. Last year I took my first lot of IVs for five years, although I was badly ill after my dissertation a couple of years previous, but I have often had to take time for one-day bugs just to make sure nothing escalates. In spite of that, my time off is not dissimilar to many colleagues ( ... )

posted early!
From memory I used to make a conscious effort to make my appointments and treatment part of my normal conversation (not all the time, obviously) so it was natural for colleagues to ask about it.
