We used to go see the Cosmos and the indoor team, the NY Arrows, all the time when I was growing up. And the rest of the audience consisted almost entirely of other soccer-playing kids and their parents -- hence the failures of both leagues ( ... )

Actually, the $900 is so the parents can say, "Oooh, my son plays hockey."

But that's the beauty of soccer, all you need is a ball, and some open space.

It's such a great pick up game. We play often Thursdays at lunch riverside at work. I played in a boys league as a kid since there was no girls league locally - they redubbed it co-ed then when I and 2 other girls signed up to play. Just like with pickup hockey I played (with all boys) growing up, in football I found myself again subject to the ole "shove the girl in net" (get her out of the way?) tactic frequently. I think I'd really be a very different person today if I hadn't played so much sport with boys, me being in positions of being attacked, growing up.

re: "I believe the problem with professional soccer in the US lies in the inabality to break the game for TV commercials."
