We used to go see the Cosmos and the indoor team, the NY Arrows, all the time when I was growing up. And the rest of the audience consisted almost entirely of other soccer-playing kids and their parents -- hence the failures of both leagues

...the beauty of soccer, all you need is a ball, and some open space.
It's such a great pick up game. We play often Thursdays at lunch riverside at work. I played in a boys league as a kid since there was no girls league locally - they redubbed it co-ed then when I and 2 other girls signed up to play. Just like with pickup hockey I played (with all boys) growing up, in football I found myself again subject to the ole "shove the girl in net" (get her out of the way?) tactic frequently. I think I'd really be a very different person today if I hadn't played so much sport with boys, me being in positions of being attacked, growing up.
Just posted! Hadn't done so in so long, it took me a long time to remember the html code for images and one of the LJ tags. Thanks for the encouragement, it felt good to connect w/folk on LJ again.
