La Salle's basketball team is one of the teams that has won several championships and this created several rivalries, the most popular of which is their rivaly with Ateneo which started in 1939. UP students are known for being idealistic and pro-active in pressing social issues. They are also the most expressive in showing their anti-colonial and anti-feudal sentiments.
The UP Fighting Maroons were once a powerhouse in the UAAP. Its basketball team however now lags behind the other three Big 4 universities. The UP Pep Squad has created, however, a long standing rivalry with the University of Santo Tomas in the cheerdance category, one of most highly attended UAAP events.
