Oh hey, I was supposed to post this days ago. Whoops.

Little known fact: the University of Iowa Library has one of the largest collections of fanzines.

I didn't know this until Sydney launched herself at me when I was visiting the bookshop last week. She works in special collections and told me there were thousands of Kirk/Spock fanzines from the ( Read more... )

As someone who actually adores corny romance on more than one occasion I have to say how grateful I am that the writing stile in fandom has changed for the better, in my opinion. Especially the sex scenes! XD

Oh, there are still fics that use this kind of style! I think it has its place. I'm glad there's a variety of terms for penis -- we have ~throbbing maleness~ as well as ~fat dicks~ :D

It definitely has it's place, as long as there are people that enjoy writing it and others that enjoy reading it.^^ I even own a few zines myself, I just dislike it when Spock or Kirk feel too OOC for my liking. And when it comes to descriptions for penis I still prefer cock or prick. XD

I think it's kind of awesome you just found porn at the university that is so against showing it to their students at a theater.

If Tom Rocklin Of Bijou Porn Fame ever set foot in the library, I am pretty sure the librarians would CUT HIM.

This is awesomesauce. I love the kitty picture too!

And as someone who worked in a college archives and special collections unit, I can only imagine the about of laughing and overall mocking that went on while this collection was processed. And I'm sad that we never had anything this cool where I worked.

So glad you showed this to us. :)

Oh, I know Sydney had a lot of laughs when she went through and processed these. There are thousands more than the ones I went through. I can only imagine the shenanigans that went on during cataloging. :D

I am most struck by "dicks don't grow on trees." I love the UI's special collections.

Mary Sue does come out of Trek fandom, I'm pretty sure she either emerged from TOS-era, or Next Gen. So while that picture might not have been the origin point for the idea of a Sue, it's definitely around the same time as the idea was emerging. The stereotype is the new, sexy ensign on the ship that everyone loves who has more skills than everyone else on the Enterprise, and she dies tragically in Kirk's arms (or Spock's, or whomever the author particularly fancied). So it's smack-dab in there, I think.

It should amuse you that I have some old Horatio Hornblower 'zines floating around in my files, I think in my parents' basement. I feel very old admitting that. (The funny part is my Latin prof in college gave them to me.)

I think you're right! I think I always associate Trek Mary Sues with Wesley Crusher, I admit.
