I stopped wearing red poppies the year I found out that BAE, a massive arms-exporting company, was one of the sponsors of the Poppy Appeal and had their logo on some British Legion promotional material. However short of money the Poppy Appeal might be, they should not be advertising an arms-exporter on a day when we remember those who died in war.
The poppy split originally came into being only because the British Legion would not put the words "No More War" in the centre of their poppies. Personally, I think that the most important thing about Remembrance day is not just remembering the people who died, but also saying "Never again. Let's learn from our mistakes and find a better way of resolving conflict than killing strangers, so that younger generations don't have to go through what we have."
The profits from the white poppies I bought are being donated this year to a charity set up to help the victims of land mines - just as valid a cause as the British Legion.
If the red poppy emphasised remembering all those who suffer

But war's a human thing, because to get rid of it you have to make everyone think the same: without it, there'd be no individuality, no freedom to do what the hell you wanted, just a monotonous 'utopia'. I know freedom of speech etc. isn't true, but it's as close as we're going to get without anarchy. If humanity wants freedom, it has to fight for it, because not all humanity wants freedom, making it human because it's free to think the way it wants. Cue vicious circle
