I have joined the ranks of the employed, for the next six weeks or so...with its associated multitude of joys, such as getting up before 7am, wearing shirts and black trousers and shoes that (as I've just discovered) destroy the backs of my heels if I walk any distance in them ( Read more... )

I hope that bike has mudguards or you'll be covered in bus-slush every time it rains! Mine does and my lower legs still get soaked (hence shorts). Do you go Castle Boulevard way? I leave about 7:20-25 so if you're out at that time you might pass me ;P It takes me approx. 10mins to cycle from where I am, without gears and using the cycle paths, which is less than the bus takes (between 10 and 15mins) because it uses a longer route! I do have the luxury of being able to catch a bus if it's raining though, and my buses from Broadmarsh to work are every 15mins. I do sympathise on the commute though: I got back at 6:30 before gaming last night at 7! Stupid work being important... At least with yours the hours are more-or-less fixed, yes?

Congrat's on a job though: menial stuff is fine so long as it's not permanent and the pay's minimum wage at least :)

It has a mudguard, yes - first thing I bought, along with a big lock :D I'm going via the canal at the moment, because it's direct and flat and it comes out right by the train station. Although I'm unlikely to run into you anyway, because I leave (try to) leave the house at 7.45 at the moment.

And for menial work, it's surprisingly not-boring so far :)

FLAT?! There's a bridge over the entrance to the marina which has a sign saying 'Cyclists must dismount' and is humpbacked and studded, and then the route up to the station is pretty vicious too. Coming from your house's area (Beeston house, at busy times), I tend to head down the road that's next right from Salthouse Lane and drop onto University Boulevard's wonderful cycle tracks, then follow 'Route 6' :) Going back I'd use the same route but come up to West Entrance rather than out by the roundabout.

Ok, the bridge is quite horrible, but the bit going up to the station isn't too bad... Although I do only use the canal route from the other side of the Dunkirk roundabout onwards, because the cycle tracks along University Boulevard are indeed wonderful. They just get a bit...disjointed after that.
