Youth Hostels are pretty great places to meet people if you're stuck for somewhere. WWOOFing sounds pretty good: while I'm not in the whole organic thing (it's more damaging to the environment at the moment because it's shipped in to supermarkets from Mexico and places like that: I'm a locally-grown fan) getting together with people who're interested in the same things you are is well worthwhile.
You're able to claim Jobseekers etc. after 1st July of the year you end your course IIRC. You'll need to stay in one place though, and declare a number of things including the places you've lived for the past 5 years, if you've been abroad in the past three, that sort of thing.
You say Le Mans, I say 'visit the racecourse'. Being a castle/cathedral/architecture fan I can't really recommend anywhere and, besides, I've not done much of France!
