Change of Plans

First and possibly most importantly, I saw a red squirrel a few days ago!  It was a wild squirrel and it was just sitting there on the road to the campsite, looking at me!  Then it ran away, because it wasn't tame like the ones on campus.  But it was so gorgeous!

Second, the gap year's plans have had a slight change of direction - before I left, I ( Read more... )

WWOOFING in NZ is amazing apparently! Though places also run out fast, so you have to get in there. Otherwise you can usually stay for free at one of the independent hostels if you work for them (usually means cleaning up the kitchen at the end of the day or something like that) and get some other sort of work.

Sorry France isn't working out so well :-( But yay for red squirrels and finding yourself and being independent :-)

I am remembering this, and may just take you up on that ;)

And yes, I plan to organise my WWOOFing in NZ far in advance, if at all possible! I like this well-planned way of doing things - going where the wind takes me sounds like fun in theory, but in practice it's fairly stressful!

Sorry it hasn't been what you hoped for so far! But it sounds great to be able to travel and discover nice places on your own and just being able to go where the wind takes you..=)

You'll probably find those reds are bigger than our reds :) I got pretty close to one in Germany :D

Youth Hostels are pretty great places to meet people if you're stuck for somewhere. WWOOFing sounds pretty good: while I'm not in the whole organic thing (it's more damaging to the environment at the moment because it's shipped in to supermarkets from Mexico and places like that: I'm a locally-grown fan) getting together with people who're interested in the same things you are is well worthwhile.

You're able to claim Jobseekers etc. after 1st July of the year you end your course IIRC. You'll need to stay in one place though, and declare a number of things including the places you've lived for the past 5 years, if you've been abroad in the past three, that sort of thing.

You say Le Mans, I say 'visit the racecourse'. Being a castle/cathedral/architecture fan I can't really recommend anywhere and, besides, I've not done much of France!
