Last night, after I got off work, I hit a dog. She ran across the road right into the path of my car. Fortunately I had already seen her and had started slowing down, so it was only a light tap. The dog was fine ( Read more... )

Oh, I'm quite sure she's made up HER mind! That was obvious the second she jumped in the car.

Well, first off, a breed like that should, once in good health, be a fairly low-dander dog, so allergies shouldn't be an issue with proper care. Secondly, vet bills might not be fun in the short term but they'll improve quite a bit, especially if you're careful about how the dog socializes. Your biggest monthly expense would be heartworm meds (an essential in Florida), and elderly people on fixed incomes make that work pretty easily all the time, so I know it can be done. My dad's a veterinarian, so I know much of the ins and outs here. If expense is your concern with respect to vaccines, there are county clinics all the time and you can even DIY with a visit to a feed store, although I don't recommend it ( ... )

My sister got her dog from a golden retriever rescue, so I'll be contacting them soon. I have a couple of different places in mind, but a lot of it takes time, waiting for openings and homes.

It can take time, but perhaps your schedule and your roommate can make a little patience while that happens, should you decide not to make it permanent.

maybe it's a south florida thing, but i've always been told never to give animals away. you should always set a fee of at least $25 to keep your furry friends out of dog fighting pits.

That's something I've heard a few times as well... not to give the dog away free. If someone really wants a pet they're more likely to pay a nominal re-home fee. I think it's a big-city thing.

Honestly, the dog's less likely to go psycho or stab you in the back. Carpe canum, I always say.

Well, it's better than the other kind of bitch...

Of course, it could also be the best way to guarantee that you get some unconditional love and adoration.

the boxer rescue i work with helps mixed breeds all the time. they even have set (lower) adoption fees for the mixes.

i would give the breed specific rescue a try, before giving up on rescues altogether.

I have a vet visit set up for 9:15 tomorrow. The golden retriever rescue asked a couple of different questions that I didn't know the answer to... some I couldn't know without knowing the history of the dog, of course, but some of the health related ones require a vet trip. As far as fostering goes, the rescue needs to know the health of the dog before they can find a foster home. That will be taken care of tomorrow morning, and I can finish the surrender application form.
