The scene you set sounds wonderful - especially the hot mulled cider (as I call hot cider). Who needs to go out when you have that? I do hope that you don't lose power. That is always a danger in ice storms, however. But - let's not borrow trouble!

We seldom lose power in the city. All wires are underground. I remember the New Hampshire years, especially in the house that did not have a wood stove. Everytime there was a major freeze or a storm the electricity went out and so the thermostat would not work. After one winter we made certain to have a wood stove so we would never be cold and would always be able to heat a pot of soup and hot water for tea.

Here in the housing community where we live on Hilton Head, the wires are also underground, and we don't have as many power outages. However ... if something causes the outage outside of our community - it is usually a lot more serious. We lose power more frequently on Long Island - and during Hurricane Sandy we were out 5 days. For us, it's not as much of a hardship as our hot water heater works without electricity, and we have a gas stove and the cook top can work when there is no electricy. We also have running water since it's town water, and we don't have a pump at the house to bring in water. So --- I can cook hot meals on top of the stove and take a hot shower. What more could I want? :)
