I'm thinking about this now and I think I have my answer. If I were to know I was going to die in three years (or however long), I would ideally change what I'm doing now with my life so I could be content in my last three years of life. But if I were to die in three years without knowing ahead of time, I think I'd be okay with my life.

It just seems to me that right before you die, you wouldn't even think to focus on all the bad stuff in your life, but instead reflect on and remember the good stuff. So the "unfulfilling" life experiences or "wasted years" become trivial and all that matters are the people and events that gave your life meaning.
