Night 56: M11 - M20 Hallway

May 30, 2011 01:23

[M20]There had been no orders from Sora as far as Kratos was aware of; it gave him cause to worry only because he tended to do poorly without some sort of direction or objective. This might have persuaded him to indeed take the night off again, but he had by some miracle managed to finish all of his dinner, and it had granted him enough - or at ( Read more... )

Badd hadn't had much of a chance to communicate with Byrne before night fell, so they hadn't strictly determined where to meet. However, they'd last met in his room and Badd had no idea where Byrne was, so it seemed the safest place to wait. He loitered outside the door with his lollipop stick firmly between his teeth and his mirror shard in his pocket.

If Byrne didn't make it here soon he'd go tearing after him. The men's cell block wasn't that big and he hadn't run into anything nasty walking there before, but a lot of strange things could happen here. And Byrne was unarmed. Badd tried to relax and trust in his partner's ability to walk in a straight line without falling over and killing himself but it was hard not to worry every time Byrne went out of his sight.

[...LET'S TRY THAT AGAIN from here.]

Oh good, no need to wander around hoping he knew where the door was. Badd was conveniently standing right there waiting for him. How nice. Of course, Byrne wasted no time running up to the old detective once he spotted him standing around in the dark. "Badd!"

...Wow, he actually had a lollipop? Byrne was this close to asking him where he got that from until he remembered oh yeah, Doyleton, durr. Where else would he have gotten it? Where would Byrne have gotten those Swiss rolls earlier? Sheesh, he was seriously out of it tonight.

"Keep it down," Badd hissed, though anyone who knew him as closely as Byrne would know he was more relieved than upset. They hadn't given the prisoners watches but it felt like it had been far too long since he'd last seen his partner's face. At least two hours.

Inside Badd's room the radio crackled, and the little soap opera of two noteworthy individuals played out. Badd listened to it with a scornful expression, twisting his lollipop stick in annoyance, and when they finished he grabbed the little radio from his desk.

"Sounds like we have a turf war going on. Interesting." He dropped his hand from the stick and hooked his thumb in his pocket, the closest he ever got to standing at attention in front of anyone. "Where to, Mr. Faraday?"

What? Byrne heard the radio too, which was why he had a heavily confused look on his face right now. One voice sounded familiar - that was the guy that used to be in charge, right? - but the other one didn't ring any bells. What was all this talk about escaping and a basement? And since when did this place have a basement, anyway? Byrne never saw any stairs that went down below the first level, and he didn't remember any other patients talking about there being a basement. Pretty suspicious from the sound of it ( ... )

Badd didn't trust Landel to have their best interests at heart, but he trusted him to really, really hate Aguilar. He'd seen enough scumbags go for each others' throats to the benefit of the good guys to be used to this pattern.

"Just to the rec field. I know it's possible to get over the walls, and there's a second floor, but no idea beyond that." He tapped his stick, pondering. "Might as well spend this round exploring. A lot of people are just trying to get out of the institute, but there's really no point. We know it's not our world, one way or another. We can't walk home." And his conversation with Lana was still weighing heavily on his mind. It wouldn't be enough to just escape to his own time and place. Badd needed to go to the right time and place.

Landel hadn't pulled them all here out of kindness, but if whatever he'd done could be reversed...there was his second chance. He could make the world right.

It's not our world. We can't walk home.

Kay was the first thing that flashed through Byrne's mind when Badd said those words. She had escaped over those walls two nights ago, but if this wasn't their world, then...then...

No. Somehow she would be okay. She would find a way back. She would. Byrne winced as he tried to ignore all the negative thoughts; but unfortunately for him, he didn't realize how obvious the gesture was until a few moments after he did it. He instantly tried to look as if nothing were wrong, despite the fact that Badd probably would have seen that (and might've even understood why he made the gesture in the first place).

"Then let's get moving," he said, trying to think of things that didn't involve his little girl being in danger in any way.

Badd caught the wince, all right, but he wasn't sure what it was about. This place would go down eventually, time-travel shenanigans or not, and if there was a military and a government that meant there had to be an outside world somewhere. Kay's priority would be going home but Badd had a slightly different destination. He wasn't yet ready to explain his plan to Byrne because he wasn't sure what his partner would make of it...it was a wild plan, anyway, to go back in time and stop murderers before they happened, murderers before they went down that path to darkness.

"Moving where, exactly?" he asked, shutting the door up behind them. He had his flashlight, of course, but the notebook was tucked into his pocket with the radio. This place didn't give you a coherent map.

Somewhere, Byrne was about to reply, but he stopped himself and took a moment to think of a better answer. "I'm curious about the second floor. There's gotta be something to see up there, especially since it seems to be staff-only."

Whether Badd agreed to go there or not, Byrne turned and started walking so they could at least get moving somewhere. It was better than standing around here any longer.

No plans for tonight, as far as Javert could tell; Doyleton trips always ended like this, if they didn't end in a panicking patient populace and inevitable bloodshed. Well, he could content himself with the quiet. At the very least, it would afford him an opportunity to restock his supplies and prepare for the next night.

He dressed quickly, took his radio, journal, and saber, and headed out the door with a perfunctory inclination of the head to Badd.
