Nightshift 49: Ruins

[From here]The rain was sharp and cold against Hime's face, but there was no crunch of shattered glass beneath her shoes, only that of gravel. The street, the stores, the town - gone. More importantly, at least to Hime, so was the zombie. She had hoped that by breaking through the window she might circumvent the spell on the doors, but once again ( Read more... )

[Annnnd back again!]

The nauseating jolt that accompanied each shift was starting to feel like a faint background percussion to some whacked-out rock band gig, but the cumulative effect was very nearly strong enough to send Yuffie crashing down to her knees for the second time that night.

Actually, it was strong enough. Yuffie just had enough presence of mind to smack her shuriken into the sodden, muddy ground and catch herself on it, her fingers tightening convulsively against the treacherously slippery metal.

"… Please don’t tell me we're back where I think we are," Yuffie forced herself to complain, her breath coming short and raggedy. "'Cuz this is one train I want off of. Yesterday."

Well that was new.

One could make the assumption that walking back through the same door would always lead you to where you'd just been, but this wasn't the first time they'd done so. What was so special about this case, other than whoever was running the show wanting them to stay out in the rain for as long as possible?

Cloud didn't want to look at Yuffie right away, mostly because it only made his own stomach do flip-flops. But they couldn't keep putting her through this. They needed to get inside, at least, if not find somewhere they could just stay put until morning came ( ... )

It looked like he'd been more right than he'd thought. It took Zack a second to realize that they were back where they'd come from, standing outside the destroyed church. What was this about, all of a sudden? Maybe they were just stuck outside until morning came. It wasn't the best fate, but he could at least remind himself that they hadn't been attacked thus far. The Tonberry didn't count, as it'd been a pretty simple fight ( ... )

If she'd been in a less sour mood, the mercurial young ninja would've taken Cloud's offer and run to the moon with it. Haha, take that, sucker! He'd have been eating his charity like a stray mutt in a butchers'. But, unfortunately for all involved, Yuffie really didn't feel like playing around right now. Her response was as immediate as it was resounding; short, sweet (ha!) and to the point: "Hell. No."

She got back to her feet using both her shuriken and Cloud's shoulder (which she may, may have just squeezed in apology; who'd be able to tell?) as crutches. It was bad form for her to be acting like this, she knew. Sure, she felt like a dragon had chewed her up and spat her back out again, but the team was more important. Letting the motion sickness get to her, letting the rain get to her, letting the night get to her were all just ways to award yet more points to the jerk pulling the strings ( ... )

Compared to Doyleton, what they could see of this town was pretty damn small. It looked to be a crossroads with a handful of buildings and nothing more. There may have been more at some point, taken out by some sort of natural or man-made disaster, and that was depressing enough to think about after their trip through an empty Gaia that he really hoped it had just been small from the get-go.

None of the other buildings were in as good a shape as the church, and the one across the road was no exception. There was hardly a door to speak of, but somehow Cloud figured it would do the job. He stepped through first, once again making sure the others were close behind.
