Re: "Racial Slurrage"alun_cleweJune 14 2004, 12:27:43 UTC
In your disagreement with the reviewer's contention that most sexual humor deals with racial slurrage, you overlook one crucial point: that "slurrage" is, apparently, a word that the reviewer just made up. (Heck, it's not even in the Oxford English Dictionary, and that thing's the size of a good multivolume encyclopedia.) Accordingly, it can mean whatever the reviewer wants it to mean. Oh, sure, it might seem natural to assume that "racial slurrage" has something to do with "racial slurs", but that is, in fact, only an assumption, and not one that can be definitely established. Perhaps "racial slurrage" means, heck, I don't know, wordplay, or "jokes about farmers' daughters", or something. The simple fact is that we cannot know what "racial slurrage" means until the reviewer, who seems to have invented the word "slurrage", chooses to tell us. And until we know what "racial slurrage" is, we cannot judge whether or not in fact a horrifying majority of sexual humor truly contains it

You don't know me. But I'm posting this message because I was wondering to myself if I shouldn't maybe go through the people on Selena's (kitsune76) livejournal friends list, in order to make sure that they know she is ill. Because it suddenly struck me that it would be quite horrible if somebody didn't know because they didn't happen to have myself or Roz on their friends list.
So. That's the purpose of this message. If you're on Sels friends list, then I guess you must know her, and I just wanted to make sure that you knew.
And I suppose while I'm here, I could also point you towards:
"What is with everyone thinking that people are saying Sexy Losers is a bad adult comic because it is about sex?"
Well, enlighten me, Frank, what is the reason Sexy Losers is a bad comic then, because under your editorialship, it has certainly been slammed more than its fair share.
Hey Hard -- I wondered if you'd ask me that eventually. I'm already pretty aware of your thoughts on the whole issue, and I'm likewise aware that a number of people have jumped on one side or another and etc etc etc... I purposely tried to stay out of the rants/discussions you were having, but I have no problems answering your direct question.
Here are my thoughts on the whole thing (I'll break up the responses, because this'll likely be pretty long):
1) The Trepal review: It was NOT a bad review. It was also not a GLOWING review. All in all, it offered some positives and some negatives. It stated valid arguments -- some of which I agreed with personally, some of which I disagreed with -- and highlighted strengths and weaknesses

2) The Dalton Wemble column: Columns are PURE opinion pieces. Wemble, who has already set himself up as being a major crank, has got to be taken with a grain of salt

I have nothing against you, and have never had any desire to carry out any sort of crusade, either personally or through my publication.
Hell, I like you, hard. I always have, and you know that.
I run a publication in the best way I possibly can, given that it is a 100% volunteer production. Since I am not paying my contributors, I do not think it right to superimpose *any* sort of personal bias or agenda onto their works.
While I try to offer the 'Pedia some general direction, I can't force people to agree with everything I think. All I can do (and try to do) is make certain that any material handed to me by my many contributors presents a solid argument and supporting material to back up the argument(s

There is no way to debate this, you're absolutely right. From my point of view, a negative review spurs me on more than a positive one would. Also, I can't say you're wrong, because people do get discouraged on account of negative reviews or comments about their comic. So there we all are.
Comixpedia, at least, offers up a review form that also discussion of the comic and then, in the comments, the review itself. There's no grading system or anything that simply says "good" or "bad" or "I liked it personally".

and ask you if you might be able to write something for her that I could print out and add to the book that I'm making for her.
Thanks for your time. Sorry to intrude.
