Eveylyn's Guide to Gracious Coastal Georgia Living...

May 13, 2012 07:31

From Facebook this time last year:

For Lee, Bunny, Kathy and other devotees of gracious coastal Georgia living, I will try to put into words the thoughts and actions of my late, great Coastal Georgia born 'n bred mom. She considered herself quite the Island hostess from their home on Kings Way, St. Simons Island, in the years before I was born. She ( Read more... )

I so see myself sitting on the porch at Tara with a mint julep......

Good advice about the kids and flavoured cordials...

I was often sent to bed at nine. Shortly before then, while watching tv, I got a vanilla or chocolate ice cream liberally laced with creme de menthe - for 'sleepy time'.

If somebody saw my parents do that nowadays, they'd probably call the law and have them arrested for child abuse!

That was fun to read. Growing up, we always had the following in the house:
Beer - usually Miller High Life.
Wine - the folks made their own, 4 gallons at a time
Whiskey - Windsor Canadian
vodka - the cheap stuff was okay, as it got mixed with flavored sodas

We're close to the same vintage, lolz.

Miller was the beer whenever there was a call for it. I don't recall it being around that often.
Mom loved Canadian whiskey. I think Windsor might've been one of the brands - I remember Canadian Mist being the preferred spirit. I don't know if that's the same thing or not.
For vodka, I can't recall if there was a preference. Like ya'll, it probably didn't matter all that much since it was usually in a mix. Gin was usually Tanqueray or Beefeater. I think there was a hunky bearded fellow on the label I admired....

Well done, and I'm sure, accurate. Regarding the health issues from such a lifestyle, I think stress does more damage now than alcohol did then.
Your mother sounds like a great dame.

She was quite the lady. She was very proud of her Savannah heritage. If you've been to places like Savannah, Charleston, or Mobile, you know the culture is quite a bit different than the rest of the south.
They considered themselves more cultured than the bumpkins inland, lol. Cocktails were a civilized part of society, not something of the devil like they might consider elsewhere.

As I mentioned above, folks of coastal lineage (places like Charleston and Savannah) consider(ed) themselves quite distinct from the 'rednecks' inland.

This reminds me of an old Georgia saying:
The first question a person from Augusta will ask you is
"What is your mother's maiden name?"
From Atlanta:
"What business are you in?"
From Macon:
"What church do you attend?"
From Savannah:
"What would you like to drink?"

there is almost something like that in Gone With the Wind...about the difference between Georgia folk. The southern coast is definately one place I would like to visit one day

Oh.

Em.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

You just described SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many of my mother's St. Simon's-wannabe friends as I was growing up in Jacksonville.

As you know, I've already stolen this over on the Book of Farces; do you mind too much if I also do share this on the Plus of Goo? :-)

Have at it and enjoy.
Raise a full glass (filled with your favourite cocktail) in a southerly direction toward at Bonaventure Cemetery (yes, the very one featured in the book and movie 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil')
That's where the family plot is located....
