Whatever the reasons behind it, it does tend to feed the unpleasant impression that "LiveJournal thinks fanfiction and queer people are an embarrassment."
ETA: the change now appears to have been reversed, but the comment reply here looks like unambiguous confirmation that those interests were deliberately being filtered. I suspect a lot of people are now wondering why, and whether the filtering would have been removed if users hadn't noticed.
ETA2: There have now been a few vague comment from an LJ staff member, buried deep amid the threads at news, to the effect that the filtering was a "mistake" and did not represent "company-wide" opinion. Followed by dead silence.

Oh, really. But who could think it would come to that ? Nosik always treated free speech like... like brother, didn't he ? Though... regrettably... he was not exactly his brother's keeper.
