FIC: What We Know (STXI, PG13)

Jun 22, 2010 01:51

Almost a year ago, I wrote my first story in the STXI fandom, The Things You See and The Way You See Them. This story is a sort-of bookend to that story. It is a "stupid writing experiment" and a character study of Jim Kirk as a leader. It has been incubating for almost six months and it would never have gotten done without the help and ( Read more... )

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and leave such a lovely comment. The story was definitely about lessons learned, for everyone, in my mind. I'm delighted that came across!

I'm so glad you liked it. I wanted it to be a different take on the crew and their interaction with their captain; I'm really glad it came across. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and leave such a lovely comment!

You did tell about JFK, and that actually was an important part of my initial thinking about my characterization of Kirk as a leader. I'm so glad you did this pact with me, Garry! Without you, it wouldn't have gotten done at all.

I'm so glad that you liked how I portrayed Kirk was serious and intelligent, because I think he would need to be to become the legendary captain we're told he's supposed to become. :-)

I'm also glad that liked the history and influences; they were fun to have in the background.

Thank you again so so much for doing this pact with me. I'm going to add a link to your wonderful, beautiful story as soon as I get through my morning meetings (I don't want to mess with html when I'm rushing).

Hmmm, I think I have something in mind for a future pact already. :-)

Thank you so much for your encouragement and support and kind feedback. You're so observant! It was one of the original impetuses of the fic to write about how the crew felt about Kirk's being "jumped up" to captain. It was tricky ensuring he didn't hijack the story because he wanted to.

You know how he is. :-)

This is awesome. I like the collective "we" as a POV, and of course your Kirk is fantastic as he learns to be a great captain.

I'm delighted that the first-person plural narration worked for you. It was actually the starting point for the story. garryowen and I made a blood pact to experiment with a rare narrative voice, and this is what we picked. And I wanted to write about Kirk as a great captain for a long time, so it all kind of came together. I am really, really happy that you liked it.

You know, despite the number of times I've read this, I still gobbled up every word from beginning to end the moment I logged on and saw you'd posted. It really is brilliant, sweetie. You did an awesome job with such a tricky POV. I love this crew seen through your imagination. They feel like such real people, even when referenced in the collective. (Also, I would totally fly around the galaxy with your Captain Kirk.) Really great writing. *squeezes you*
