Thanks! I actually should give swythyv some credit. She suggested in an essay on the Black family that "toujours pur" may have originally been about something other than blood purity.

Apparently "cunning" comes from the Old English verb "cunnan," which meant "to know, to have power to, to be able to."
Yes! Yes! Yes! I was so excited to read this because I have been working for a very long time (when I have time) on a fanfic which is based on the same ideas and how Slytherin is so misunderstood. Hopefully I'll be able to post it soon.
