As the days go by, I keep thinking, "Will they see anything major today?" By "they," I mean the doctors, my dad and everyone else down in Florida who's looking for major improvements with my mom. Questions like, "Can she speak yet? Walk? Feed herself? Use the bathroom on her own?" are the kinds of questions lingering in my mind constantly each day ( Read more... )

Well, today I sent my mom and dad off to Florida to get Hyperbaric Oxygenation treatment for my mom. She's staying in a nursing home in between treatments, and she'll be getting two treatments a day for an hour each. This month they have a special for $150 a treatment (as opposed to $200). Things seem to be moving up with the progress of my mom. She's been able to open her eyes wide open a lot for the past few weeks, but now she actually looks at people and tracks them as they walk around her. She occasionally obeys commands like, "blink twice if you understand," "relax your arm," etc. This is going to be a slow recovery, but we all ( Read more... )

This year has just been terrible. First, my job went crazy - and I'm still at the same job. Second, I developed a crappy case of TMJ disorder. Third, my car was driving me nuts (I did get it fixed though). Fourth, my grandpa's brother passed away and also my grandpa's best friend. Well, we're currently looking into options for helping my mom. The main one being Hyperbaric Oxygenation Therapy (HBOT). It's a type of chamber to put my mom in for like an hour at a time that has slightly increased pressure and 100% pure oxygen for her to breath. Well, this week has been long and exhaustive. My mom seems to be more awake, but not necessarily alert. We get various movement from her, but it's very difficult to tell if it's reflexive or done consciously. But I swear that she's there with us when she opens her eyes, which is quite often by the way. My mom has been improving. Not much, but every bit counts. The neurologist came in yesterday to check up on her and he said he thinks it looks like her responses and such are looking like she's recovering in the area beyond the brain stem, which is what we're looking for.
