Today, I was lucky enough to see Superman Returns. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I loved the movie. I'll see it at least 3 more times in the theatre and I'll be first in line at Wal-mart to get it on DVD

I haven't seen it yet, so I'm not sure, but my impression from the previews is that Superman seems more angst-ridden than in the past. Maybe that's the difference you're seeing? If that's even there.
Yeah, without a doubt there is a bit more angst. Supes is not as happy go lucky as he used to be. He reminds me a bit more of Peter Parker than Clark Kent in this one. (That's not a complaint, mind you.)
I think it was too ambitious but without really being ballsy. It tried to bank on people's love for S:TM but then kind of pulled a fast one with all the changes they made with characterizations and such (Langella's Perry White? Wake me up when he's off screen.) Like we talked about the relationship between all the characters has changed, not because its 5 years after Superman 2 but because they're being played by different actors under a different director

I watched the ending again today, (3 times... they know me at that theatre.) The movie works for me. With the exception of Frank Langella, the most over rated actor of all time (If I ever meet him I'll tell him so!) I think it was a good return for Superman. I agree, I would have liked to see an origin retelling, however I think doing it this way works the way James Bond works. They don't redo the origin every time a new bond comes along

Hey! Why did it say anonymous! It's me, Dan! I want everyone to know it. If Frank Langella reads it I want him to know who hates him so much! (Except for his turn as Skeletor in Masters of the Universe. His performance was sheer genius.)

Dan you were witnessing a reinvention of a childhood memory. Remember when Christopher Reeves left the wheelchair for the Superman costume; it was earth shattering especially for someone your age (at the time Numero uno premiered.) Now all these years later you are much older (and wiser young Skywalker) and you have to attach new memories to an old friend. It’s kind of the same thing that happened to Ant and I when Cartoon network started to show the Thundercat cartoons. When we were kids that show was the pinnacle of awesomeness Lion-O was it! But once we had grown older and saw it through different eyes we had to attach new memories to something that had once been held so dear. Just be thankful that at least in your situation you seem half-way pleased with the product (which is a miracle in and of it self.)

I know that's part of it, and (that's an excellent observation on your part)however I think I figured out what was so strange about the movie for me

I don't know if that was it. (Although it could have been.) It's a darker film than the originals. I'll hopefully see it again today. Then I'll know.
