and YES gormenghast!!!  such an incredible tale, I love all the characters dearly..haven't met many who have read them, maybe because I am from the US?  hmm LOL.  Makes me want to break back out my huge brick of a book.

Mmm. Probably my most favourite book in the entire world. To be honest, I don't think it's hugely read even in the uk. Maybe it's just a bit too weird for the common taste. Over the years I try to read many other things and I realised I was always kind of thinking 'yes, I'm quite enjoying this, but I really wish I was reading gormenghast again'... So in the end I just gave up and returned to it. It takes long enough to get through!
Have you had a chance to see the TV adaptation that the BBC made a few years ago? Christopher lee was Flay. Jonathon Rhys Meyers was Steerpike. Sometimes TV adaptations are a huge disappointment, but I thought they did a pretty good job. It's out on DVD. They had a good creepy vibe going.
