youtube is my valentine

hi, i'm still here. everyone should take a look at hannah's awesome bollywood-themed youtube meme, in which i was "tagged." i'm not ordering anyone to do this, but "5 youtube music videos" seems to be the theme, if you wanna give it a shot. i figured i'd do mine for valentine's day (with no particular sweetheart in mind, dearest peanut-gallery ( Read more... )

weirdly, neil young's mtv unplugged was the first album I ever received/bought of his work. I think I know (and prefer) the versions of "Like a Hurricane", "Long May You Run", and the Buffalo Springfield "Mr Soul" way, way more than the ones contained on the official album releases.

my first neil record was harvest moon. i kinda like that one still. 90's neil young is surprisingly good, all around.

agreed about all the versions save "mr. soul", which has a pre-punk kinda vibe to it in the original that i think is really bad-ass.

1. the supremes are good but i can't say that's my favorite song. i don't know, good though.
2. ew, i do not like that fancy nancy thing, and her mouth freaks me out.
3. i love gal costa and rousseau (you are right about the set). you put this on a mix for me once.
4. tsunami is so fun. thanks for reminding me of their existence
5. i love Neil Young with all my heart. he has been popping up in my life over the past few days, weird. that song is soo soo amazing. you also put it on a mix for me before! do you remember those?

i put "baby" on a mix for you? huh... usually i go with one of the more upbeat songs. that first self-titled gal costa record is MIXTAPE GOLD though ( ... )

Oh man, you'd never heard the original Apna Desh? It's better than the SCG version! That voice!

That's my favorite Supremes song by far. But I have the same problem with soul that I have with reggae, that the brilliant tracks are so randomly scattered that I can never work up the effort to track enough of them down. Ever heard Sandie Sheldon's "You're Gonna Make Me Love You"? Only track I really loved off a comp heard at random. Or I'd hear some via covers.

i've only really seen like one bollywood movie the whole way through (gumnaam). i need to see more, definitely...

i like the tracks you posted. i don't have the same problem i guess though. i'm more of an album guy than a single guy. and i seem more inclined to like entire bands than you, maybe? if i like something, i tend to like/forgive a lot of things about it... you seem more selective.

I figured it was being an album (and artist) guy that made it problematic...I am too, so these endless compilations with only a track or two of genius are exasperating. I mean, when it comes to the Fall, I was insatiable for a while... But yeah, those genres where you pretty much are required to enjoy a lot of stuff that's "Just ok" to find the hidden gems are those I have the most trouble with. Pulp s-f, for example.

huh... didn't have you pegged for an album guy, david.

i'm real selective about shit like that with books. one of the few advantages of being a criminally slow reader. if something doesn't offer me anything 100-odd pages in, i'm done with it. it's probably why i've never bothered with, like, harry potter and stuff like that.

apologies to your lj friend... it's all in good fun... i should post some pics of me from back then, since i was equally long-haired/androgynous. i looked kinda like that kid from dazed and confused (wiley wiggins? or was wiley wiggins the kid from star trek that's a fancy blogger right now?)... crossed with a gelfling from the dark crystal... crossed with nancy mc keon from the facts of life...

it's all good, basically. what a small world!

funny, I thought spicoli/johannsen was kind of a compliment!

love these except.. oh man, the fancy nancy.
I kind of like old school nonseq/weirdo humor, like this was the real acme of humor for my mix tape crew in HS

fancy nancy is not fairing well in this thread danschank February 15 2008, 06:45:44 UTC
btw, nothing says "i was born in the 70's" like knowing who king missle is... assuming you were born in the 70's?

spicoli/johannson wasn't so much a criticism as an assessment of how people looked in 1993 in general, myself included.

i think i'm generally a sucker for people-unabashedly-fucking-around-on-youtube as a source of entertainment. fancy nancy is a particularly agressive example of that, i suppose...

you know, i think i discovered those videos by noodling through your posts when we added each other, haha... i simultaneously can and can't imagine what she'd be like in person. did she break character?

what is your zine?

oh, that's cute! she was really nice, but she didn't break character at all. you can find her actual myspace page if you look...i can't exactly tell what she's really like though. it doesn't seem like she's a lot like fancy nancy.

my zine is called surf's up. you know, after the beach boys. it's not about the beach boys though.
