hi, i'm still here. everyone should take a look at hannah's awesome bollywood-themed youtube meme, in which i was "tagged." i'm not ordering anyone to do this, but "5 youtube music videos" seems to be the theme, if you wanna give it a shot. i figured i'd do mine for valentine's day (with no particular sweetheart in mind, dearest peanut-gallery ( Read more... )

both of us need to post more.

yeah, you DC peeps got some cool a$$ bands back in the nineties... unrest is probably one of my most listened to bands right now.

i don't listen to too many philly bands really, come to think of it. i probably should. i guess i like the nouveau-hippie stuff from philly though.

apologies again, for making silly remarks about your friend... god, THREE people in this thread know someone depicted in my youtube clips!

ah don't write anything when I'm not posting, and writing is th greatest fun, therefore although not-posting is sometimes necessary it can also be self-deprivation in a bad way

My favourite local bands are all th usual candidates: Fugazi, Unrest, Lungfish, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Rites of Spring, Tsunami, Jawbox, I must be forgetting somebody ... All of these bands always seemed 2 me 2B free of fashion

Haha don't think anyone'd find those remarks disagreeable, Johansson was th 2006 sexiest woman alive or something!--mza.

yeah i kinda miss the early nineties indie rock fashion sense. when dudes either looked totally 100% normal, or had the shaved head/white tee/clunky glasses combo. i was probably the former, once i cut my alterna hair off.

i guess being more adventurous fashion-wise is good too, but it can get out of hand sometimes.

"You Keep Me Hangin' On" is probably my favorite of the Supremes but I do love this one too. It's an interesting point that you make on the folk wisdom aspect of love songs, given that Lil' Wayne took the "wisdom" aspect of "Stop! In The Name of Love" and went another way with it (watch through 1:05 if you aren't a Weezy fan):

I think it's Ross's theatricality that always freaks people out in her performance. She tries to express the sentiment but ends up looking like she's about to snap when she does it next to Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard who take a more natural approach. At least it's no defect to her sense of meter when she sings.

2.
Fancy Nancy also goes the theatrical way but I think I love her (not really in the "We Fight" video, though).

3.
Is there any way I could get that first Gal Costa album from you? I used to have it but then it started incessantly skipping. I still have Sebastiana somewhere but I need my fix.

5.
Dear god, that organ completely changes the tone.

i'll upload the gal costa record later. i have it on disc upstairs, but it might take a few minutes to find it.

i liked the lil' wayne video. i'm just kinda getting into him now. i like when he almost sounds like a dancehall dude sometimes.

yeah, there's something really nervous and weird about diana ross. she also evokes michael jackson to me, which makes her weird by default, i guess...

oh look bjork has a tv show brendan62442 February 17 2008, 01:02:44 UTC
I like the part you said about girly non-sequitir humour. A lot of my favourite stuff is non sequitir humour, and I always go for it when it's got warmth or sweetness -- Home Movies is the best example of this. There's been a giant backlash, at least from the people I talk to, against nihilist shows like Family Guy and South Park. Fancy Nancy reminds me of the Maria Bamford Show.

My dad plays a lot of Supremes when I am in the room. The song you posted is probably the best one.

yeah, i can't get into south park or family guy. the humor on family guy always seems so contrived to me. with fancy nancy, i kinda like the complete-ness of it, and how far she's willing to go... there are some clips where she introduces her "cousin", which is blatantly her in a leather jacket, and she's really dedicated to the character in a way that i can kinda get behind, even though it's totally stupid i guess...

Gal Costa anonymous February 27 2008, 15:14:32 UTC
Homes Gal Costa back in the day was the ish! Have you ever heard the record with Caetano Veloso called "Domingo", probably one of my favorite records of all time. Joint was made way before the Tropicalia movement began. Her voice juxtaposed to his in a mostly quiet setting is beyond captivating. Good look for posting that. Hey Caribou is coming again (March 29th @ Johnny Brenda's), you in?! AND Soft Circle (Hisham Bharoocha's moniker) opening for Boredoms.
