Positing this phrase as one of the saddest conversational phrases I can think of that
a) Doesn't actually name any person or thing, by relationship or improper or proper noun;
b) Therefore can be used in a multitude of situations and relationships;
c) Still retains a usual sad meaning despite this variety of uses.
