from my environmental psych notes:

frogs - placed in hot water jump out immediately
- heat gradually and they boil to death

i'm sure there was some reasoning behind this but can't remember other than a generalised point that the environment can influence behaviour...

i just read it in Peter M. Senge's, The Fifth Discipline. The Art & Practice of the Learning Organization, p. 22

"We will not avoid the fate of the frog until we learn to slow down and see the gradual processes that often pose the greatest threats." (ibd., 23)
