The Desiderata was a permanent fixture on the wall in the house I grew up in. I don't know where my parents got it from or how long it had been hanging there when I learned to read it. I used to think somebody had built the house around it back in the 1910s.
Come to think of it, it was a more strict version. For example it just said "God" instead of "God, whatever you conceive Him to be."
A drug-dealing friend of mine was into charming everyone's parents. He charmed mine by asking for paper and pen, and copying the whole thing in front of them. Made a big show of it. How they beamed.
