For what it's worth: I found a notification in my e-mail this morning of a spam comment with a dodgy link to a post I made in a community. The community's moderator's journal has been deleted. When I went to the page to delete + report as spam, I didn't find said spam comment, nor was there any trace of it in my LJ-inbox, not even a "you have one deleted comment". I could, however, delete the comment straight from my e-mail using the links provided therein.
I don't know if this is because that comm is effectively moderator-less, but there you go. :\

I myself received notification of a reply to a comment I made in a comm, saw the graphic embedded, thought nothing of it, and replied. When the page loaded, there were my two comments, with nothing to show for the fact that there was another one between them.
