Teacher, leave them kids alone

I'm torn on this one.

Yvonne Meyer scored an undisclosed payout from a Melbourne private school because her son made it to year five without being able to read and write properly - and so the school, she argued, breached the Trade Practices Act ( Read more... )

Oh, the hell parents can't teach their kids reading and writing. You read to your kids every day, pretty soon they'll be reading to you. That's how I and my brothers all learned to read by the time we were three, and how all our kids (a total of ten, including two who are high-functioning autistic) did likewise.

It's a sure bet that litigious mom can't read either.

Yeah, what she said.

Iunno if you have this over thar, but here there's a product called LeapPad. It's a big electronic gizmo that you can buy different plastic "books" for. It's one of them things that "makes the book come alive" by making noise when you push things. They're heavily advertised every Christmas, and they emphasize "OMG your kid will get a headstart on school! You'll come home from work and they'll read you a whole sentence! And then they'll click the thingie and it'll make noise."

You know, because Mr. and Ms. Working Q. Parents couldn't possibly read to their kids for TEN MINUTES A NIGHT. Kids' books don't take that long. But no, your kids should have expensive electronic gizmos instead of plain ol' books and a library card.

WTF. My parents taught me how to read and write before I ever went to school.

It shouldn't be entirely up to parents to educate kids unless the kids are home-schooled, but this is ridiculous. I wonder why she didn't raise a stink before now (if she, indeed, had not. I haven't clicked the link, shame on me)?

Maybe it depends on what they mean by 'properly'. There are kids in my high school who still need remedial reading helpers and stuff like that... Maybe that was also how it went so long without being noticed.

one of Kiah's pet peeves in life is the generation of "it's not my fault" parents who blame everybody but themselves for problems that can be directly traced to shoddy/negligent/apathetic parenting.

I knew there was a reason I liked you. One of Mazzy's pet peeves is people not taking responsibility for their actions.
