I agree with most of the points, but one thing I'd add is that it didn't embody the federation, _but_ the federation was still in its infant stages at this point so it might not have really had the high ideals settled yet. They were still in their building stages really at this movie's point. Just my two cents. That being said, I'm still in shock over Vulcan. Once I had a bit of time to digest the movie, the 'changing the timeline plot' bothered me less, since they handled it reasonably well and set things up for future growing movies. It is better than the comic book method of 'it was all a dream' or 'let's go back in history and fix everything magically'.

Number one: You suck for not putting a spoiler warning. Next you're gonna tell me that Snape killed Dumbledore.
Number two: I have no issues with the timeline. I totally bought into alternate timeline idea.
Number three: While the plot was simplistic, I enjoyed it.
Number four: It completely made me feel like a little kid again, sitting on the floor of the livingroom with my family watching Star Trek. Like, literally. Like, almost flashback quality. It made me feel as excited about Star Trek as I did when I was little. That's not sitting at the cool kids table, that's... I dunno. That's ineffable quality shit right there, it is.
Number five: This is the number that follows four, but is before six.

You make valid points. But I see it that we still have our original universe to love. And now, we have a new shiny one to play in. I've said before that any fan of sci-fi already has the ability to dismiss our current reality to enjoy an adventure in another time and place. That said, there are things I'm going to have a hard time with. Deaths of the parents high on that list...but why didn't the romance between Spock and Uhura make your list? I'll get past it I'm sure, but still found it hitting my Trek Fangirl Nerve.
I've seen that in some of the books, it's semi-cannon. Personally I love what they did with Uhura, she's one of the most underrated characters on the show.
Russell said he was happy they finally made Uhura sexy. I reminded him that Nichelle Nichols was considered quite the freaking hottie for her time, that we simply have way different standards nowadays.
Uhura as she was imagined for the movie was a significant character, and vastly interesting.
