I would not. Too much sudsing! (Well, maybe a few drops, if you are in dire straights, but not for long-term use.)

What can I do? Baking soda with a vinegar rinse? I have no HE detergent, don't want to go buy some, but really want to do laundry!!!

Do a cup of baking soda with a few drops of Dr B's, that will get you through today. Baking soda alone won't wash clothes, but it does boost detergent. enough that a few drops should do ya...

(Vinegar rinse optional. That's more for softening than for cleaning, at any rate...)

Um... there's some HE detergent in the box I have for you in my car. And it should be there at the end of the week (?).

That's funny :)

Okay, I'll do that today. Thank you!
And out of curiosity - what HE detergent would you recommend that is babybum/cd-friendly?

Hi, i'm a major lurker...found you from Mandella0021 and couldn't resist commenting on this one.

I have a front loading washing machine...and i've watched it on many occasions ;) Mine does the exact same thing as yours and i've never been concerned. I just assumed thats how they were. My clothes still get washed...and i pack my clothes in there good..and i mean stuff! The sales lady actually told me the more clothes, the better (who knoew!). Also, i don't always use the HE detergent. I've used regular soap and have had absolutely no problems. I actually sat and watched a load with regular liquid tide and wondered why there were no suds...and then found out that thats the purpose of the HE...so i really don't think it matters on the detergent. And i would have never thought to add more water...i think they are meant to use as little water as possible. I wouldn't return your washer :o)

Sorry for all the rambling :o)

Me too, to all of the above.

Thanks, Tina! Did you have your HE machine for CDing Hailey? If so, how were they at washing the diapers?? That's my primary concern at this point. I'd rather not trade in for a top-loader - we got this machine at a STEAL around Black Friday ($400!!!) and even top-loaders are more than that now and much fewer buttons to place with!

My diapers get clean. If I have a particularly big or poopy load, I do a rinse and spin, then a "heavy" cycle, and another rinse and spin. I've only ever had problems with stink from our hard water causing ammonia problems (particularly with my pockets) but I use vinegar in the pre-wash (rinse and spin) and no more stink!

Oh, and my clothes just tumble too...seems very slowly! and i've often wondered if they are getting washed just slowly tumbling around. I've had mine now for 3 1/2 years and i love it :o)

So strange - I keep thinking, how is the dirt being dissolved and washed away??? Maybe it's just years and years of top-loading brainwashing ;)

Google it!! How HE front laoders work. They *do* clean your clothes (and diapers), they do!

I use liquid 7th Generation HE detergent for diapers, and Tide Free HE for all other laundry.

I plan on getting proper HE detergent at some point - I just wanted to do a load and it was too icy to go out for some tonight :P

I like to use powdered detergent (to cut down on plastic waste) - does 7th gen. come in only liquid?

I'm not sure. Can you use powdered detergent in HE machines? I'm not even sure. Check your manual maybe. I KWYM about the plastic though - even though I recycle it and buy 2x or 3x concentrated detergent, it's still plastic waste :-/

(Icon love!)

I'm positive our machine takes powder. It's also so much easier to carry in from the store!
