I've been gone all week because my grandmother passed away. We laid her to rest at her birthplace on a small ranch outside of Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico. I'm not a religious person, but I was very moved by what the priest said: this is the end of an era, but we must not let the memory of her die. This is a celebration of life ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to hear about that. You are right though in that death should be a celebration of life.

The priest talked about three deaths we go through when someone we love dies: the first was the clinical death, death of the body. The second happens when the body is interred, it is then that we truly realize that they will no longer be with us. The third death is when people have forgotten those who have died, and this is the worse one.

He encouraged celebrating her life by telling our children and grandchildren about her: funny stories, good advice, and so on. We should not let that third death happen to anyone we love.

My sister and I really were moved.

Thank you. It was a very lovely ceremony. The priest talked about three deaths we go through when someone we love dies: the first was the clinical death, death of the body. The second happens when the body is interred, it is then that we truly realize that they will no longer be with us and we will see them for the last time. The third death is when people have forgotten those who have died, and this is the worse one.

He encouraged celebrating her life by telling our children and grandchildren about her: funny stories, good advice, and so on. We should not let that third death happen to anyone we love.

Love your icon, btw. We were watching Temple of Doom this past week with my dad (he is a HUGE Indiana Jones fan)
