Unnnnn, yeah, I'm gonna go with huh as well.

I know I'm not a rocket scientist, but I like to think I have a good layman's grasp of things and for the life of me I can't think of any way to create that effect.

All I know is, I've seen too many movies, read too many books, to NOT think "Um, this can't be a good thing", right?

Unless it was a joint Russian/U.S. effort to seal a portal of some kind.

Maybe it was a Russian missile defense test? that could be an ionization trail from a ground based particle beam, but that spiral, that BUGS me.

Someone suggested it might have been a puncture in the side of the rocket, diverting the thrust like a spectacular firework. The gas/whatever mixture was high enough in the sky that it was reflecting the sun. The whatever shooting down is a bit of a mystery, but still.

Someone else noticed no one is claiming it's a giant hypnodisk set up intended to hypnotize Norway. Looking at it, I have to admit that that is a bit disappointing.

But sub launched missiles tend to be solid fuel. If you get a burnthru high in the casing it just goes flooy. It would tumble. You'd have to have a symmetrical venting at equal points, and based on photos of old 'spin stabilized' rockets you'd get a cone of exhaust, not a distinct spiral pattern.

But I'm sure that within a week there'll be a very plausible explanation.

Well, have you ever seen a type of firework called a bouncing blossom? It spins at an amazing rate by shooting a flame out the side.

Honestly I have no idea, I'm just sputtering here. Frankly it's the spreading darkness at the end of the video clips that freaks me out some.

Yeah, I figure even if it's a hoax, it's a really amazing hoax.

Neat! Looks like the thing was corkscrewing rather than spinning through the air.

I don't know what to think, but it was pretty spectacular. ^_^

Looks like it was actually a failed Russian rocket test:
