He's also written one of the best Vampire books EVER! Highly suggest picking it up as an audio book seeing how it's read by Ron Perlman.

I read about that last night. :( It's a totally bummer, but understandable. If it takes three years to film out there and now it's at six years and counting... that's too long for him to be out of the business. It's really too bad, though - he's a great director and would have done great things with The Hobbit.

I dunno... I've only seen Pan's Labyrinth but that seems awful dark to be compared with The Hobbit. Not saying he's a bad director, just the opposite.. but perhaps not the right style.

Symmetrical, certainly. I've always thought of The Hobbit as a different kind of story, lighter and fluffier than Lord Of The Rings, so a different director would actually work to its benefit, IMHO. Peter should be intimately involved, most assuredly, but someone else would bring a different angle on things.

I wasn't completely sold on del Toro to begin with for that reason, actually. Pan's Labyrinth was a very very well made movie, but was very very NOT a light and fluffy movie. Maybe Chris Columbus of Harry Potter fame... that would work.
