Book covers

I can't always tell what makes a good or bad book cover. Here's an interesting post by Rachel Neumeier with pictures and advice from a panel.

Neumeier's The Floating Islands is one of my favorite books.

It's interesting. There's a Spanish editorial house that i love for the covers of their books. Not fantasy, rather essay or realist, present day literature, but they have this clean lines, elegant compositions, and then choose modern paintings for their covers, whether they have to do or not directly with the story... well for several years I found myself buying their books for their covers, and never even once was I was disappointed. I do pay attention to the cove, whatever that says about me, lolol.

You can see what I'm talking about in the banner in this link: http://www.anagrama-ed.es/catalogo
The collections I'm talking about are the black ones and the yellow ones. I discovered a couple of my favorite authors through them! :-)

Judging by the spines, those resemble academic books, which tend to be sort of solid looking.

Most people respond to covers. They function like small billboards for the book. But they really shouldn't deceive the reader. That's how you tick a reader off.
