Chemicals = Bad, but Coke = Good?

So, I have been really good about not having my favorite beverage, good old Coca-Cola.  I have had the occasional sip of my husband's coke since he can still have it, but I've been sticking to Sprite, lemonade, hot decaf herbal tea, or water ( Read more... )

i know im not pregnant or anything but erica mcdaniels (grove) is pregnant and shes having the same issue as you but with pepsi. her doctor told her that she could have one can of diet pepsi a day and the baby would be just fine. obviously she hasnt drank that much but having an occasional one here and there wont hurt.

It is obviously a relief to hear that, lol! I can put back the co-cola if I am given the chance, but really have been working on cutting out caffeine all together with the exception of small pieces of chocolate-- you can't expect a pregnant woman to give up chocolate ;-)

I do know that the little kid will be exposed to chemicals after s/he is born, but while his/her little brain and nervous system are developing, and I control the environment s/he lives in I want to keep them as low as possible. So many chemicals have been linked to allergies and asthma, etc. I will do my best to not feel guilty when I want a coke or Mickey D's Fries, though. :-)

"An alcoholic smoker who eats five cheeseburgers a day" rotfl-- actually that sounds A LOT like me ;-)

Dude...my mom was 17 when she got preggers with me...and who knows how long it took for her to realize it?

My mom drinks regular Pepsi like a FIEND and my entire family smoked all the time, so she was ALWAYS in the environment. And I came out ok....all except that tail they had to cut off, but I'm the devil incarnate, so what could they do?? :D

If you cut back on the bad stuff that's great, but you don't have to become neurotic about it. This baby is going to be wonderful simply because you care so much about its' well-being to even THINK about giving up half the stuff you have. Organic makeup? Sheesh. Not something I would have thought about.

And you shouldn't feel guilty about your cravings...did you ever hear that story where Liza Abukamail ate chalk in her science class coz chalk is made of calcium and she was craving it really bad during her pregnancy? yea....

Remember also that the placenta and your other tubes act as a filter, so if you consume it, that doesn't mean it goes straight to your baby. Our bodies are pretty amazing, and after this long, they seem to have the whole baking-a-human thing down pretty well.

Not that you should chain smoke or chug cokes, obviously huge consumption is enough to saturate through, but don't feel as if everything you ingest is going straight to your baby's brain ;-)

I read a study that indicated that the average newborn, minutes after delivery is born with over 10,000 man-made chemicals in their bloodstreams... just kind of creepy, imo, even with the protective measures our bodies put in place.

Well, I can understand why you want to cut out chemicals and things. It would be a good thing for all of us to do really, but, with Luke I did EVERYTHING exactly like I was supposed to. I didn't have caffeine at all, I ate very balanced meals, I took my prenatal, basically I did everything the way the textbooks say too, and he was still born two month prematurely and had to stay a month in the NICU. Not to scare you or anything, but stuff happens whether or not you try your best to control it. I must say though, that I admire your will power!! Good luck, and try not to feel too guilty, I am sure that most of our parents ate some crazy things during pregnancy, and I must say that I am guilty of that too, but we all turned out okay!! :-) Just the fact that you are thinking about it and doing your best for the baby's health and your own is saying a lot!!
