I'm against the notion of banning junk foods at school altogether, no matter what they are. It's the parents' job to decide what their kid should eat and buy, not the school's. Ugh, nanny state indeed.

I've just seen documentaries on how they decide what is effectively considered "nutritious"... it's basically like any state or federal contract-- lowest bidders win.

It is my belief that if there are more truly nutrient-rich options that the schools will be teaching balanced nutrition rather than just getting kids used to eating nachos and drinking sugar pop everyday. I agree that not all "junk" should be taken away, but especially for elementary school students, who have less awareness of their own dietary needs, there should more consideration of what is given permission to be in schools.
