OMG, HE'S WEARING A COSTUME WHILE DUNKING! AUTOMATIC 50! Yeah, I don't get it. Does wearing a cape add *that* much more, besides (negligible) drag and resistance to his movement? In my still-newbie-fan perspective, I consider putting the ball between your legs, or blowing out a cupcake on the rim while not knocking ( Read more... )

First off, it's not about drag. The costume was just a prop. A two footed plant is much harder to start a dunk from, and you don't get the distance that you normally should. If you look at long jumping or doing it yourself, you'll understand. He also took the pass off a high bounce pass and threw it into the basket. While I agree, it's not technically a dunk, a lot of people have different ideas of what a dunk is. A layup is considered a dunk in some circles. Just because you don't grab the rim, doesn't mean it's not a dunk. If anything, it's even harder to throw it in. Finally, he has to be pretty high up to throw it from above the rim. If you look at the height and the image of the situation, you can understand the hype.

Blowing out the candle is simple. The dunk was just a matter of him dunking the ball directly (nothing tricky about that) and blowing some wind in the direction of the cupcake (also not hard).

I've warmed up to it in the past couple of days, but my original confusion wasn't about whether it was a dunk or not, just why it received a perfect score. From reading around I understand that it was mostly the height that made it impressive, however the difference between his dunk and the others that used props (I wouldn't call his costume a prop), is that Dwight could've done his without the costume, whereas in all the other cases the prop required something else to be done besides the dunk itself.

Superman makes for a nice image, but I consider the candle a more creative idea, as you're doing something else besides just throwing the ball down. And if we're giving points for style, theatrics and creativity (which we must be, in order for Dwight to get a perfect 50), I would give more to Green for the cupcake dunk.
