I recently discovered this page which chronicles the various early theaters in San Diego that have come and gone, with particular emphasis on pre-1940's theaters. The pictures are all so achingly beautiful, I recommend looking through all of them.

I love Spreckle's too. these are beautiful. I wish they'd restore a couple.

Look through the page, some of the ones that have been demolished are heart-breakingly beautiful, especially the Fairmont, Pantages, The Savoy, the State....

spreckel's is my favourite place, ever. i want to live there.

i think the hillcrest theatre is still nothing. i was there on my birthday, but i can't remember if anything is there now or not. however, i know that off the record suddenly became a costume store and is now somewhere around university avenue ...

Flashbacks is now where Off the Record was, and Off the Record is now on, like, University & Utah, I think. A few years back, there was something in the Hillcrest theater, for what seemed like three minutes...

downtown LA has a big concentration of old theaters palaces, most built in the 20s or so. i didn't know this about san diego, though. thanks for sharing.

I've always really wanted to go look around at Downtown L.A.'s old theaters, but I would need a tour-guide and a day or so. Perhaps I will go this summer, and while I'm at it, tour Hollywood for all the neat stuff I've been meaning to visit.
