Sometimes words begin to drain themselves out of my mind, and I wonder if I'm about to lose it,

...my self-identityI haven't been around much; busy with the new school year. Readings, exams, assignments, applications...it's consuming so much of my existence. I felt I needed a little break from it all to reflect on my thoughts here, for the very IMPORTANT reason that I don't want my current self to vanish out of my memory(I'll get to that ( Read more... )

Strange. I remember when I was a kid I used to wonder what I'd be like ten or twenty years from that time, but I thought of it more as a Back to the Future kind of thing, with my then self and my future self in one time frame at the same time. Then I'd make scenes with my present self and presumed future self, wondering if they'd get on each other's nerves or if the future self would give advice to my then present self. Ever since I've made journal entries that I can look regularly back to though, I feel like I only have to read them again to have that ghost of a former me rise up in my mind. She doesn't have to tell me who thought she was and what things she thought were important, because the way she... I wrote it back then makes me remember how I... she was. I've also tried to send messages to myself in the future, but the places I put those reminders get tampered with so when the time comes for me to retrieve it, I can't remember what it was anymore. I remember when I was around six my dad told me he'd tell me the meaning of a ( ... )

I've been reading a Buddhist book lately, and it offers interesting explanations to the human psyche. Buddha says that there is no eternal, unchanging soul and that what you think is your personality / a living being "can be seen to be but a temporary coming together of many activities and parts - when complete it is called a 'living being', but after the parts separate and the activities cease it is not called a 'living being' anymore."

Hah, yeah I was actually reading some Buddist writing on that the other day.

I tend to agree it and other thinkers with similar thoughts. There was something I was thinking lately...about some sort of physical reincarnation. Not one where a soul exists, but that atoms in you gets reincarnated back into the universe to becomes something else.

Well first of all, I'd like to say that I'm also glad that we've "met" (well, we haven't really met but maybe our streams of conciousness have met). And how rarely do I write something in my journal... so there's no need to worry that I'd stop reading yours.
Reading this posting here, I thought you might like to talk to your inner child a bit, just to connect again. You might need to stretch your imagination a bit to do it, but for me, it worked out fine.

Hah, sorry, that message was intended for someone else. But I guess that's what happens with vague statements with no specific person described. So I deleted it. :-)

Oh, it sounded so general, you could have meant anybody. And thanks again for sharing the deep insights into your way of thinking on here. Probably, I already learnt things from you.

Oh, yeah, I noticed that too. Haven't read that particular piece by Parfit that he mentioned though.

Me neither. Do you think is strange that people seem to be thinking of the same things at the same time. Like that post appearing in philosophy, or is it just that you pay more attention to things when you have just thought of them.

When I went through my f-list and saw that post, it felt a bit strange that (s)he had a post on the same topic as me...but eventually, I figured maybe it's because I currently have my mind on that, and will readily notice it if I see it. Also, I guess there are only so many general topics to write about in philosophy.
