So is this the start?

Paizo, the former publishers of Dungeon and Dragon magazines have announced to make their own RPG using the 3.5 SRD. After long talks on their message boards about 4th Ed. D&D. I think this is the start of the gaming community's rebellion against the new rule set. The rule set is in open Alpha right now with a free .pdf download. They want input. ( Read more... )

No it isn't based on either. Their idea of a Pathfinder, is a member of an orginization of explorers and adventurers whom specialize in finding archeological items and information, hunt and/or study rare beast or civilization, and basically meddle with thoose whom don't like to be meddle with. Kind like the Forgotten Realms Harpers, but not as in your face or confrontational.

How about for those of us who just want our D&D and not have it be a massive multi-player (or whatever the term is) I guess there's 3.5...

That is the thing. Paizo is just toying with the 3.5 SRD. This is not an MMORPG just a Alpha of their RPG book. They just want people who don't want to pay out the nose for 4th Ed. to test it out ans say what they think of it.

well right, and my understanding was that 4.0 morphs D&D into a MMORPG which is something that I for one am not interested in. So, I want the setting and the mechanics to mesh. Which is why I'm considering just staying with 3.5 for D&D and perhaps checking out this other thing over here as well.

Think of Pathfinder as 3.7

I understand exactly what you are saying. These guys said "Fuck 4th ed and all their idiotic extras, why don't we just take what's broken about 3.5 and fix it!"

Which is exactly what they are doing. Example: I've been playing 3.0/3.5 since it came out. I have played characters who specialized in grappling. After 7 years of this, under 3.5 I STILL have to look it up EVERY time to see how it's done. Pathfinder has fixed this idiotic rule.

I should note: Pathfinder is 100% backwards compatible with 3.5
You could have a party with two characters, one made under 3.5, one made under Pathfinder, and not tell the difference other than that the guy using the Pathfinder character spends less time flipping through the book and more time playing.

My opinion: As I read through the Pathfinder packet, I am more excited about the evolution of the game than I have EVER been.

is "4.0," the "vista," of the gaming world? daibheid March 19 2008, 18:49:23 UTC
you say, "i'll only get this one," but you're an addict. you know you'll get more than that :D

i'll go to a bookstore, pick up the book, thumb through it and maybe pick up the player's guide. that's all i did for 3.0.

I am not opposed to 4.0. I just think the timing of the release sucked. If they gave it a few more years I would have been happy.

I've seen some of the concepts of it and it sounds interesting but as Cat said it makes it more Video game like, which I am not to happy about.

I do like this Alpha and the increased hit dice for rogues and wizards.

It is hot. It is so hot it is scortching hot. The only two things I was less than pleased with was the skills and the feat-tree's. I just got an update and BOTH of those are being fixed.
