Gay male social circles are sometimes awash in sexism and/or racism. There are also gay men who are on board with feminism and anti-racism (and I try to be in this group) -- and then there are all the convoluted and faux-"edgy" types and the "affectionately" sexist crowd. And I'm still working on strategies for addressing that set -- because we're talking about a social crowd that can be so steeped in irony and sarcasm that the straightforward approach to calling people on their shit sometimes just doesn't work. The only luck I've had in that direction is in re-framing the sexist crap as half-assed amateur attempts at throwing shade (along with the obvious between-the-lines appeals to feminism).

Yes, Mme. Palin is full of crap -- for reasons completely unrelated to her gender and entirely related to her actions and positions as a public figure. (...OK, and we might spare a bit of a side-eye for her "more budget than taste" wardrobe -- Rick Perry, you're oh so very much next.) And any would-be scene queen who wants to ( ... )

and I think it is worth noting how frustrating this shit is for queer women especially when queer men make those sorts of comments.

Nah. That would involve women having desires and sexual agency and the ability to do things for themselves rather than for men. Who ever heard of that? There are just women who do things with other women for the viewing pleasure of men. Or so I'm told.

i had something snarky and sarcastic to say to this in order to reply in agreement with it, but when i thought about how upsetting it was i just couldn't bring myself to be snarky and sarcastic even if i concurred with this. it's really upsetting, and i'm sorry.
