with the landscaping. THANK GOD. I'm tired of dealing with our contractor and ready to enjoy the yard. What's left is the wood gate install, and wiring for path lighting and uplights. Its so lovely to be rid of the dirt! We really like everything and feel it gives us a great start. I already have this itch to plant some other flowers in the planter ( Read more... )

Good question... decklededge January 21 2004, 13:49:05 UTC
Here's the thing: In the end he DID do good work (well, his contractors did) and we are happy with the end results. In the middle of everything though, he just stopped communicating with us; not returning phone calls or saying he would be doing something on said day and then not doing it until days or a week later. That bugged us to no end. What got it started was him leading us to believe we would get a lot accomplished the week after Christmas when we took that week off, but he claims he was sick and/or out of town. (Did not change his voice mail, nor call to say "hey, we can't do anything now I'm taking a vacation/sick ( ... )

Contractors - they suck. Well, unless you pay a gazillion dollars for the good ones. Timeliness & organization do not seem to be in a contractor's vocabulary, eh? Your recount of your contractor's excuses for not showing up, not returning calls...I know ALL TOO WELL, unfortunately. And it doesn't seem like it's focused on just landscapers, believe me.

But hey, at least you have a kickass yard now. What was the total project time from start (design) to finish?

Yes, most contractors do indeed suck. I guess its the trade-off for owning a home verses an apt where everything is handled by the landlord. We keep reminding each other its worth it. It totally is in the end!

Our project broke ground on Nov. 28, the day after thanksgiving and although it is still ongoing, waiting on the gate install and wiring for lights to be done, the majority of it was completed last Friday, Jan. 16th; so about two months from start to finish for the actual work. Add on a week or two prior to the start date for interviewing and finalizing the design. There were two solid weeks in there that NOTHING was done though, so its not like they were slaving away every day for two solid months.

It looks great, Janet. Your backyard is gorgeous. (I wish we had a backyard that we could landscape to our every whim, but I guess we'll just have to settle with our townhome owners taste. :( )

Janet, it looks awesome! You must be so relieved to have it just about done. I am still in awe of your huge backyard!
