Idol 9.21 The Music Made Me Do It

Sep 16, 2014 12:53

Stand-up comedy calls to me the way music resonates so well with most of the world. So much so that instead of working on an entry this morning like I should've been, I was looking up tickets to see Dave Chapelle and Jerry Seinfeld. Unfortunately, Dave Chapelle is on tonight, too late for me to take public transport to see him, and yet I still ( Read more... )

Is that cheap for such a big name like Seinfeld? I think in the past I've heard good things about him, how he tries to be accessible as he can.

I have no idea. I don't think I paid that much to see Robin Williams, but that was so long ago that I can't remember how much I paid (though obviously airfare included made it more expensive). Chris Tucker was cheaper. Something like $53 or so? Dave Chapelle was $67, if I'd managed to get a ticket for him.

That's pretty cheap! I like stand-up, but I've never gone to see it because I figured it would be expensive. I always hear of concert tickets for extremely popular artists costing hundreds of dollars ... I mean, I guess they do, I've never been to a concert either. Maybe I just have a distorted idea of ticket prices for some reason.

What's Margaret Cho like live? I always get a good feeling watching her routine, I figure she must build a really memorable rapport with the audience.

Seeing famous Australian comedians in Australia tends to be a fair bit cheaper than it is in the US, but they're not at the same level of fame as these American comedians. I think concerts are generally more expensive than comedy, but there are more people who work them and need to be paid, I think, and also they generally last longer on stage.

Margaret Cho was only on stage for about 7 minutes, but it was such a memorable experience and I'm so glad I got to be there. I hope I'll have the chance to see a full length show with her someday.

Oh, man, he is one of my absolute favorites. I would be so sad if I missed him like this.

I was like this with comedy when I was younger. As an older teenager, I'd slipped into music and didn't look back until years later, with my interest in oral storytelling.

I couldn't really justify it on such short notice and with also wanting to see Jerry Seinfeld. Hopefully he'll come back around again at a time that I can see him, though!

Yay! Another comedy fan. :D I've had such a good time at the other shows I've been to. And I'm pretty stoked that I'm going to get to see Jerry Seinfeld next month!

What I do know is that when I got to see Robin Williams live, and flew all the way to Honolulu in order to see him, I did not regret it for a second. And now, less than four years later, he's gone.

That's why I went to see Bill Cosby when he came through My Fair City a couple of years ago. (Didn't hurt that he was performing the day after my birthday!) I missed out on seeing George Carlin once and I'm still kicking myself over that.

Oh, man, that must have been incredible! It was nearly my birthday when I went to see Robin Williams, so that was totally my birthday present. If I'd missed an opportunity to see George Carlin, I think I'd be kicking myself too.

I approve of this. :-) Though I can't remember the last comedian I've seen live, per se. I did get to see Penn & Teller a few years ago, though ... comedy with special effects?

My husband would be jealous; he really likes Penn & Teller. I like the approval. :)

Pretty much every time we go out to Vegas (and we manage to go about every other year) we make it a point to see Penn & Teller's show. I love that they hobnob with everyone afterwards, and sign autographs and stuff, and yes - when he's not onstage, Teller will talk! :)

The thought of Teller talking scares me. :-) Though I really liked his article in the Smithsonian magazine last year. Are they still at the Rio, then? Or do they move around?
